If you make deep-breathing noises through your mouth whilst you are asleep, this is known as Snoring. When you breathe deeply, this can cause your throat to vibrate and this vibration is what causes the sounds made by snoring. Snoring can happen when you are breathing in or breathing out.
As you sleep, your muscles relax and this can lead to your airway becoming narrower the narrower the airway, the louder the snore. People don't snore when they are awake because the tissues in the back of the throat are held in place by muscles. As you get older, you also tend to snore more as your muscle tone degenerates.
Lots of people have come up with numerous solutions to get snorers to sleep on their side such putting a tennis ball in a pocket on the back of their pyjamas. Raising the top of the bed by putting bricks under the bed legs is also recommended by some people, although its also felt that raising your head on additional pillows doesnt work.
You can help yourself reduce your chances of snoring by changing your lifestyle and eating habits. If you lose weight, exercise more, stop smoking and limit your intake of alcohol and sedative medicines, you can help prevent snoring. You can also use nose strips and decongestants to help keep your airways clear and reduce the chance of snoring.
Most people who snore are blissfully unaware of the noise they are making, but it can cause a major problem for their partner who will sometimes think they are trying to get to sleep in a mainline railway station. The unlucky person is usually just dropping off to sleep when their partner ensures they will have a disturbed night by emitting a very loud snore.
Although snoring is usually treated as a bit of a joke, it can sometimes indicate that there may be a more serious medical problem. Whilst problems with tonsils, adenoids and sinuses are troublesome but not considered serious, if you stop breathing when you're asleep (sleep apnoea), this can be life threatening.
The medical profession is sometimes overwhelmed by people asking for a cure to
prevent snoring. However, unless someone is suffering from a sleep disorder such as sleep apnoea or their tonsils or adenoids are enlarged, generally a doctor will not be able to help them and will probably advise home-treatment.
Snoring can cause serious problems in relationships and has even sometimes been used as a reason for divorce. The lack of sleep which one person has to endure can cause a lot of strain in marriages and although snoring is unlikely to be the main reason for the relationship breakdown, it can be a major contributing factor.
